Learner: Alex Usudan       Learning Coach: Kaori Kobayashi                  Date: 4/3/16
Learning Area:   Reading Narrative Assessment
Learning Observed
In shared reading, Madagascar Deaf learners have learned not only to read the text but also to translate into NZSL.  It is important for Alex to understand the story well as she is unable to translate into NZSL if she does not know the story well.
Alex was curious to learn unknown words and examine them in the English dictionary and NZSL dictionary.  If she was not sure the meanings in the dictionary, she asked her learning coach and/or the NZSL interpreter what it means.
She worked collaboratively with her buddy and was capable to share her understandings with him.  She tried to use correct NZSL grammar while retelling the story.  When discussing about the ending of the story, she connected her own experience and shared her ideas about how we can stop teasing in the classroom.

Next Learning Steps

  • Understand the difference between English and NZSL
  • Develop her NZSL grammar skills
  • Use her time wisely and work quickly

Learner: Ved, Prisha, Shivran, Ayush, Alex, Jasonta, Mervlyn, Neha, Brooklyn     Learning Coach: Mrs Pearson          Date: 19.02.16
Learning Area: iExperience
Curriculum AO: Forms and communicates ideas and information clearly, drawing on a range of sources (Speaking, Writing, and Presenting Level 4)
Curriculum Links:
Learning Observed
Over the last few weeks, learners form Habitat 3 have been encouraged to work collaboratively  to organise a Hui for both Habitat 1 and 3 to attend on Friday afternoon.  This has been an opportunity for learners to connect with one another and discuss and organise different ideas that they may have for this time.  This week Ved, Prisha, Shivran, Ayush, Alex, Jasonta, Mervlyn, Neha and Brooklyn, showed their capability by organising a slideshow, waiata, talent show, weather report  and certificate presentation.  Prisha and Shivran organised the slideshow that supported our two presenters, Ved and Ayush.   Alex and Jasonta signed a detailed weather report.   While, Brooklyn, Neha and Mervlyn presented certificates to those learners that were connected through play earlier in the week.

Next Learning Steps
-Continue to seek opportunities to develop their capabilities in presenting to an audience, e.g., voice projection, eye contact, expression
-Develop curiosities about other ways to show their learning with others,e.g., iMovies, plays and speeches

Learner: Alex       Learning Coach:  J Taylor        Date: 21/9/15
Learning Area: Draw it
Learning Observed
Alex chose ‘Draw it’ for her iExperience in Wk 3 - 6 Term 3. She was to show her design firstly by carefully sketching the animal she chose in detail on paper along with information about this animal. She used the internet to find the information and a picture to help her draw her animal which is a Tiger. She was then to do a final drawing (see below) of the Tiger. She has used great detail and also some of the Tigers habitat to complete her drawing. Alex finished her task but had to use some of her own time to get it completed on time. She was able to explain to others about the Tiger and its habitat.
Evidence of learning
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Alex showed she had the curiosity to find an animal that suited her. She collaborated well with the other students in sharing and helping.
Alex was able to connect to her prior knowledge and experiences in discovering about the Tiger. It was an animal that interest her.
Next Learning Steps
  • Complete your task on time
  • Gain confidence in drawing a little more detail
  • Using the internet to your full advantage
  • Don’t be afraid to try new things and colours

Nisita, Alex and Vrishti's 3D Printing Learning Story

Learners: Vrishti, Alex & Nisita    Learning Coach: T.Dillner            Date: 21.9.15
Learning Area: Technology - 3D Printing
Learning Observed
Vrishti, Alex and Nisita chose to participate in 3D Printing during iExperience during Week 7-10 this term. We initially learnt about the Thinker’s Key called ‘BAR’. BAR stands for Bigger, Add, Replace. To practise, the learners had to pick either a pen, lunch box or tennis racquet to make a feature bigger, add to the item and replace something. The learners had as much creative license as they needed and then they reflected on how functional the item had become - could it still be used for its original purpose?
The next stage was to come up with an item that we use at school and repeat the BAR process. Vrishti, Alex and Nisita decided to make a new version of a pencil case.
Vrishti, Alex and Nisita had to use the website TinkerCad to design their new and improved pencil case. They had to use the pre-existing shapes to form their 3D model which was then printed out by our LH1 3D printer.
After analysing their printed model, the girls were able to write a description about who would use it, why they designed it and what its features were. They also spent some time reflecting on improvements and redesigning it on TinkerCad to show these changes.
Evidence of learning

Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Vrishti, Alex and Nisita were collaborative during this process by sharing ideas and coming up with other ways to show creativity (Thinking, Participating & Contributing). They demonstrated curiosity by engaging with the entire technology process of designing, making, redesigning and evaluating. Vrishti, Alex and Nisita were connected as they were able to show their learning in three different mediums (paper, digital and printed model).
Next Learning Steps
  • Complete the second design on TinkerCad and print if time allows.
  • Use the 3D printer as a component of an iExplore.
  • Teach another learner how to use TinkerCad.

Alex's Operation Big Science Learning Story

Learners:  Aleena, Brooklyn, Alex and Evan                              Learning Coach: DWilkes Learning Area: Science                                                                            Sept: August 2015
Learning Observed
Aleena, Brooklyn, Evan & Alex had a blast conducting Operation Big Science in Week 7.  Thanks to the New World kit of ingredients.  Lots of learning resources as well about the Types of Mixtures and Chemical Reactions in Baking.  The learners learned that cooking is scientific fun and that the science capabilities are for life.  After initially watching a short video explaining the difference between chemical and physical changes the learners were challenged to explore their curiosity by examining their materials and discuss their priori knowledge about the materials and cooking with them.  Then they collaboratively devised an experiment - a cooking experiment, using the ingredients they selected.  First they identified a question and then a hypothesis- making connections to their prior knowledge.  As a group they needed to plan their method too. During the cooking they made observations- noting what they notice, think and wonder. Alex developed capability at measuring while completing the recipe.  Ultimately, it was collaborative and delicious!

Next Learning Steps
  • complete their Operation Big Science experiment plan with observations and explanations
  • write a reflective blog post about the experience
  • use more specific measurements when writing a recipe
  • give detailed observations about what you noticed before, during and after experiment sheet
  • Write a comment on the LH1 blog post about Operation Big Science
